THE ORIGINS OF CHESTER-LE-STREET

Chester-le-Street started life as a Roman garrison town, thought to have been founded in A.D.216. Probably known to the Romans as Concangis or Concangium, it was the site of a fort which was located around the now Middle Chare, Church Chare area of the modern town. The fort was home to a cavalry legion, around which a number of civilian settlers lived.

SAINT MARY AND SAINT CUTHBERT'S CHURCH


St. Mary and St. Cuthbert Church became the temporary resting place of St. Cuthbert's remains in 883 A.D., after the monks of Lindisfarne fled the island because of a possible attack from the Danes. His body was later interred in the Cathedral at Durham in 1104 A.D., which became his final resting place.

LUMLEY CASTLE


Lumley Castle dates back to the 14th century and was built by Sir Ralph Lumley, as the ancestral home of the Lumley family. This magnificent building serves a very different purpose these days, as a hotel.

THE ANGEL OF THE NORTH


This giant sculpture created by the artist Antony Gormley was erected in February 1998. Standing 65 feet high and with a wingspan of 175 feet, its impressive presence is witnessed daily by thousands of motorists travelling along the A1 towards Gateshead.

PENSHAW MONUMENT


Penshaw Monument was built in 1844, in memory of the politician John George Lampton, the first Earl of Durham. Built by John and Benjamin Green, it is actually a half size version on the Temple of Theseus in Greece. This prominent structure stands on Penshaw Hill on the road to Sunderland.

CHESTER-LE-STREET OUTDOOR MARKET

Chester-le-Street Outdoor Market is located in the South Burns area of the town. Market days are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, when there are many bargains to be had from a variety of different stalls.

DURHAM COUNTY CRICKET CLUB RIVERSIDE STADIUM

Located near Lumley Castle this impressive cricket venue is the first to be granted Test match Status in over a hundred years. It has hosted Test matches against countries such as Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and The West Indies. It is also the home of County Durham’s cricket team.
